Spiderman 3 In Review

Spiderman 3

This weekend I went out with my wife and brother to watch Spiderman 3. I was excited, but in the back of my mind I thought… perhaps they just won’t do the superhero justice this time around. I was greatly relieved to see that the film skillfully portrayed hours of fun. Admittedly I do think that the first 30 minutes or so the director took you all over the place to get the pieces of the plot put into play and I had higher hopes that the villains would get more face time… and perhaps would be a bit more twisted…. but I guess they never do have either of those.

The digital effects that were implemented remind us of how technology has advanced and it was used at the right times for the right reasons. In particular when a new super-villain, the Sandman, is transformed into a living sandstorm and pulverizes bits of Manhattan.

I did find it odd that the “hunk” and “babe” count of the film was surprisingly low this time around and that Tobey Maguire seemed to put on a bit of weight… or at least the camera angles didn’t always do him justice most of the time. There is a scene in which Tobey Maguire, who plays Peter Parker/Spider-Man, Thomas Haden Church, James Franco and Topher Grace square off in a four-way clash clearly designed to satisfy all tastes in hairstyle, physical build and jaw-line. The imperiled Kirsten Dunst, meanwhile, barely registers.

All in all I loved the film. The story pulls you in and takes you for a ride. I’m not for sure if it’s my favorite of the three, but it does surely tie for the 1st one in my mind. I close with this end thought… in a time when the world is going to pot the Spiderman 3 film does put it into perspective that one man can make the difference, but he / she may need help along the way.
