Easter… the connection of the egg and bunny.
As you grow up you are learn and experience all of the wonderful holidays that your faith or beliefs and parents / gardians faith and beliefs allow you to. As an adolescent you may begin to question why things are the way the are… not uncommon and I would encourage anyone to question truths… to make sure that they are true as well as to make sure that those items sit well with you… being informed is never a bad thing.
I’ve questions a variety of things that I was told were basic truths in life. As I’ve grown older… perhaps wiser and more curious… researching these topics has become a hobbie. To this end I bring you to what I’ve found on the connect between Easter and the Bunny and the Egg.
What is Easter?
In the most basic principle Easter (Resurrection Day) is one of the most important religious days in the Christian year. This holiday celebrates the resurrection of Jesus, which is believed to have occured between 27 AD and 33 AD. His ressurection is a symbol of his forgiveness to mankind for their sins. That’s the basics of it… There’s more depth to the holiday… but I’ll leave you to find more info on that if your interested.
Easter and Eostre
From what I’ve read… Easter may have found it’s origins from a pagan holiday: Eostre, the spring equinox. Eostre usually falls around March 21st of each year. The word Easter seems to have roots with the Pagan word “Eostre”, which was the name of an ancient Teutonic (Germanic) fertility Goddess.

Traditionally, in Pagan beliefs, the Eggs and rabbits were symbols of fertility. The word Easter itself is thought to have derived from the Eostre… which has roots in homage to Astarte, the goddess of fertility mentioned earlier. Basically when the christian church started converting people many pagan beliefs were incorporated to ease the transition of the followers to the new religion… by choice preferred…. or even by the sword if you were deemed a heathen.
Furthermore, Spring is a time of fertility and life bursting forth anew. So the symbols of Eostre are all about fertility and new life: eggs, baby chicks, flowers, rabbits. Those are all ancient pagan symbols of fertility. Pagans today who celebrate Eostre (also known as Ostara) still observe these old customs.
Anyway, this is what I’ve found…. connecting the dots and drawing those pretty lines to form a picture that makes sense… historical sense. I hope you found it at least interesting :). Another item of note… it seems as though Christmas has roots in the Pagan Yule as well…. the winter solstice…. i.e. decorating the tree, exchanging gifts, singing carols, etc. But that’s another blog for another time.
Regardless of religious beliefs and backgrounds I hope that you enjoy the upcoming holiday(s) and are able to spend time with those you love.
Sincerely,
Troy Kadavy
